Ryanair Takes a Green Leap: Purchases 500 Tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel from OMV

October 19, 2023 - In a significant move towards sustainable aviation, Ryanair, Europe's leading airline, has acquired 500 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from OMV, a globally recognized integrated oil, gas, and chemicals company. This strategic purchase is projected to offset over 1,250 tonnes of CO2 emissions, equivalent to approximately 100 Ryanair flights journeying from Dublin to Vienna.

This acquisition is a continuation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inked between Ryanair and OMV last year. The MoU grants Ryanair exclusive rights to procure up to 160,000 metric tonnes of SAF from OMV through 2030.

Ryanair's latest investment underscores its unwavering dedication to achieving its target of utilizing 12.5% SAF by 2030. Both Ryanair and OMV are ardently working towards the shared goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. In its pursuit of sustainability, Ryanair has already made significant strides by collaborating with Trinity College Dublin to inaugurate the Ryanair Sustainable Aviation Research Centre. Additionally, the airline has invested $22 billion in its 'Gamechanger' fleet, which slashes CO2 emissions by 16%. A further investment of $40 billion has been allocated for the acquisition of 300 Boeing 737 MAX-10 aircraft, which promise a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions while accommodating 21% more passengers.

OMV is not far behind in its sustainability endeavors. The company is ardently working towards its strategic sustainability objectives, with SAF being a pivotal component of this transformation. OMV aspires to emerge as a regional frontrunner in SAF supply.
