Dubai, UAE – In a landmark move, flydubai, the Dubai-based airline, has announced a significant expansion of its fleet with an order for 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. This agreement, unveiled at the Dubai Airshow, marks the airline's first foray into widebody jets, signaling a new era in its operational capabilities.
A Leap Forward in Fleet Diversification
The decision to introduce widebody jets into its fleet represents a major strategic shift for flydubai. His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai, reflected on the airline's journey since its first order of 50 Boeing 737 aircraft in 2008. He expressed pride in flydubai's evolution, surpassing traditional conventions in aviation and reaffirming its commitment to expanding its network. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, known for its fuel efficiency, will enable flydubai to expand its horizon and cater to growing demand on existing routes.
Operational Excellence and Customer Appeal
Ghaith Al Ghaith, Chief Executive Officer at flydubai, emphasized the airline's commitment to innovation and offering the right product at the right time. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with its combination of operational excellence, fuel efficiency, and passenger appeal, aligns perfectly with flydubai's market and customer needs. The 787-9 model, capable of flying 296 passengers up to 14,010 km (7,565 nautical miles) and carrying more cargo, will open up new nonstop routes and enhance service in both short- and medium-haul markets.
The Dreamliner Effect
Stan Deal, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, highlighted the suitability of the 787-9 for flydubai's needs, particularly in opening longer-range routes and adding capacity across its network. He noted that flydubai passengers would enjoy the unique 'Dreamliner effect', offering unparalleled comfort and a refreshed experience upon arrival.
flydubai's Growing Fleet
Currently operating an all-737 fleet of 79 airplanes, flydubai has an order backlog of 137 737s. This new order of 787 Dreamliners represents a significant expansion and diversification of its fleet, positioning the airline for continued growth and innovation.
The Middle East's Aviation Landscape
Boeing's Commercial Market Outlook forecasts that the Middle East airplane fleet will more than double over the next 20 years, with nearly half of these deliveries being widebody airplanes. This growth is driven by the region's increasing role as an international air transit hub, highlighting the strategic importance of flydubai's expansion.
flydubai's order of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners is more than just a fleet expansion; it's a bold step into a new era of aviation for the airline. With this move, flydubai is set to redefine its operational capabilities, enhance passenger experience, and further cement its position as a key player in the global aviation industry.
