Berlin Brandenburg Airport Adopts AI-Based Software to Enhance Handling Processes

Berlin/Schönefeld - Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) announced on September 27, 2023, its decision to be the first German airport to implement an AI-based software solution to optimize its handling processes. This move aligns with the airport's ongoing commitment to leveraging modern technologies to enhance service quality, punctuality, and overall efficiency at BER.

While previous digital solutions at BER were primarily centered around terminal operations, the current focus has shifted to the airport’s 49 apron positions near the terminal. In collaboration with Assaia, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH is set to roll out a comprehensive system called the digital TurnaroundControl solution. This system will employ self-learning software to analyze apron handling processes and provide actionable recommendations. The primary objective is to refine work processes related to aircraft, ensuring a more stable flight schedule and improved punctuality. The phased introduction of this product is expected in the upcoming months.

Thomas Hoff Anderson, Chief Operations Officer at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, commented on the development: “An airport, as an infrastructure operator, plays a pivotal role in ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers through stable processes and reliable flight schedules. At BER, our future strategy will heavily rely on AI-based solutions to further bolster the stability of the network and enhance punctuality metrics. We anticipate that the machine learning capabilities of the software will furnish us with invaluable insights, propelling us to refine processes in airport operations further.”

Max Diez, CEO of Assaia, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We are thrilled to partner with Berlin Brandenburg Airport and contribute to the airport’s mission of delivering an unparalleled experience for its passengers at BER. Our cutting-edge technology is poised to assist the airport in achieving its objectives, which include bolstering safety and efficiency, enhancing processing per gate, and ensuring timely operations.”

The TurnaroundControl software is designed to augment airport operations by providing real-time insights into handling processes. By integrating cameras at apron positions and utilizing AI-based software, recommendations are generated to fine-tune handling. These insights can be harnessed by ground staff to streamline processes and enhance punctuality.
