Kenya Airways, the flag carrier of Kenya, has significantly enhanced its cargo operations with the introduction of a Boeing 737-800 Freighter. This addition aligns with the airline's strategic focus on expanding its cargo capabilities.

Response to Growing Cargo Demand

The acquisition of the Boeing 737-800 Freighter is a response to the increasing demand for cargo capacity in the region. Allan Kilavuka, the CEO of Kenya Airways, emphasized the importance of a robust air cargo system to support trade and unlock the continent's full potential for socio-economic growth. This new aircraft addition is expected to enhance the airline's cargo services to existing and new destinations​​.

Expanding Cargo Routes

Kenya Airways' new freighter will service various vital routes, including Sharjah and Dubai World Central in the UAE, Jeddah and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, Dakar in Senegal, Lagos in Nigeria, Ndjamena in Chad, Mogadishu in Somalia, Mumbai in India, and several others in West Africa. The Boeing 737-800 Freighter offers a cargo capacity of 20 tons and a range of up to 7 hours, joining the existing fleet of two Boeing 737-300 Freighters operated by KQ Cargo​​.

Future Expansion Plans

In line with the growing demand and to further capitalize on trade opportunities, particularly with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Kenya Airways plans to add a second Boeing 737-800 Freighter to its fleet in February 2024. These freighters are expected to enhance the airline's capabilities in catalyzing trade within and outside Africa​​.
