In a landmark deal for the aviation industry, Air Niugini, Papua New Guinea's national airline, has placed a firm order with Airbus for six A220-100 aircraft as part of its fleet modernization program. Additionally, the airline will acquire three A220-300s and two more A220-100s from third-party lessors, marking a significant upgrade to its current fleet.

A New Era for Air Niugini: The announcement was made in Port Moresby during a special event attended by Air Niugini's Acting Chief Executive Officer, Gary Seddon, and Airbus Asia-Pacific President, Anand Stanley. Dignitaries including Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, Hon. James Marape, and the Minister for State Enterprises, Hon. William Duma, were also present to witness this historic moment for the airline, coinciding with its 50th Anniversary.

The A220: A Game-Changer for Regional Aviation: The Airbus A220 is poised to set a new standard in the 100-150 seat aircraft category, boasting the longest range, lowest fuel consumption, and widest cabin. Air Niugini plans to deploy the A220 across its domestic and regional network, enhancing capacity, reliability, and enabling the carrier to reach new destinations across the Asia-Pacific region.

Enhanced Passenger Experience and Environmental Benefits: Gary Seddon highlighted the significance of the new aircraft, stating, "The A220 will offer the highest levels of comfort for our passengers, while also ensuring a significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions." This aligns with the growing demand for more environmentally friendly travel options and the global shift towards sustainable aviation.

The 'People’s Balus' Takes Flight: Minister Duma referred to the new jets as the 'People’s Balus,' expressing his anticipation for the transformative impact they will have on travel for Papua New Guinea's citizens. Airbus Commits to Support Air Niugini's Transition: Christian Scherer of Airbus expressed gratitude for Air Niugini's confidence in their aircraft, committing to full support as the airline transitions to the A220 fleet. Equipped with Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation GTF™ engines, the aircraft promises a 25% reduction in fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generations. With the largest cabin, seats, and windows in its class, the A220 ensures unparalleled passenger comfort.

Airbus's Vision for Sustainable Aviation: In line with global sustainability goals, the A220 can operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for 100% SAF capability by 2030. With over 800 orders from around 30 customers and more than 280 deliveries to date, the A220 is already a success story in commercial aviation.
