ANA Commits to Carbon Neutrality: Pioneering Direct Air Capture Technology for Sustainable Aviation

All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan's premier airline, has recently announced a groundbreaking initiative in the aviation industry's journey towards sustainability. In a significant move, ANA becomes the first airline globally to sign a purchase agreement with 1PointFive for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits. This agreement, enabled by Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, is a pivotal step in ANA's comprehensive strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

1PointFive, a carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration company based in Houston, Texas, is constructing a DAC plant in Texas, expected to be operational by mid-2025. ANA has committed to purchasing 10,000 metric tonnes of CDR credits annually for three years starting in 2025. This innovative technology captures and removes substantial amounts of CO2 directly from the atmosphere, offering a practical solution to the challenges of decarbonizing aviation and transportation. The CO2 captured for ANA will be securely sequestered in saline reservoirs, further enhancing the environmental integrity of the initiative.

Michael Avery, President of 1PointFive, emphasized the significance of DAC as a scalable technology crucial for achieving net-zero emissions. ANA's partnership with 1PointFive marks a substantial contribution to advancing their climate strategy and showcases the potential for DAC in significantly reducing aviation emissions.

Shinichi Inoue, President and CEO of ANA, reiterated the airline's dedication to reaching carbon neutrality and its commitment to diversifying sustainability methods. This partnership is a part of ANA's broader strategy, which includes a mix of reducing emissions through operational improvements, sustainable aviation fuel, and implementing innovative technologies like DAC.

ANA's commitment to a carbon-neutral future is a testament to its leadership role in the aviation industry. By proactively pursuing sustainable and innovative technologies, ANA continues to forge a path towards a carbon-neutral society, setting a benchmark for environmental responsibility in the airline sector.

This strategic partnership between ANA and 1PointFive not only marks a significant milestone for the airline but also for the aviation industry as a whole. It highlights the growing importance of sustainable practices and the aviation sector's potential in contributing to global environmental goals. As ANA gears up for a future where sustainability is paramount, its initiatives like this one will play a crucial role in shaping a more sustainable world.
